CORSICA, SD — Two people were killed and two others were hurt in a single-vehicle crash Sunday evening about six miles southwest of Corsica. The wreck happened around 5:57 p.m. on April 19, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Officials said the crash involved a 2016 Ford Fusion traveling east on South Dakota Highway 44 near mile marker 325. The vehicle left the roadway, went into the south ditch, struck a field approach, vaulted over a fence and rolled before coming to rest in a field.
Victims identified
The driver was identified as Carey Jay Utterback, 52, of Mitchell. He died at the scene along with passenger Peggy Lynn Iverson, 72, of Sioux Falls.
Two other passengers, Bethanie Lynn Iverson, 37, and Benjamin Lyle Iverson, 36, both of Sioux Falls, were taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Sioux Falls with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Seat belt use reviewed
Investigators said Utterback was wearing a seat belt. Bethanie Iverson and Benjamin Iverson were not wearing seat belts, according to the preliminary report.
Seat belt use by Peggy Iverson has not been determined and remains under investigation, officials said.
Crash remains under investigation
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. The Department of Public Safety said the information released so far is preliminary and could be updated as the case develops.
