GREENSBORO, NC — A Locust woman faces multiple charges after an early Sunday crash in Greensboro left one of her 1-year-old twins dead and sent three children and the driver to the hospital.
Police say Jamiah Smith, 26, was behind the wheel when the single-car wreck happened near Freeman Mill Road and the ramp to I-40 West.
Police say the Honda Accord left the road on a ramp curve
According to investigators, Smith was driving a Honda Accord south on Freeman Mill Road toward I-40 West around 4:17 a.m. Sunday when she failed to negotiate the curve of the ramp.
The vehicle left the roadway, overturned and came to rest on the ramp from US 220 North to I-40 West, police said.
Child restraint issue was cited in the fatal injury
Smith had three children in the car, including a 9-year-old and twin 1-year-olds. Investigators said one twin was critically injured because the child was not properly secured in a child restraint seat.
That child died Monday evening. Police said the other two children were treated and released from the hospital the same day as the crash.
Smith faces felony and misdemeanor charges
Smith is charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, two counts of a child restraint violation, possessing an open container of alcohol, and failure to maintain lane control.
The Greensboro Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the wreck.
