GREENSBORO, NC — Police in Greensboro say a 26-year-old mother is facing multiple charges after a crash killed one of her 1-year-old twins and injured her two other children.
The wreck happened early Sunday on a ramp leading to Interstate 40 West, and investigators said the vehicle overturned after the driver failed to make a curve.
Police say Honda Accord left the roadway on Freeman Mill Road ramp
According to Greensboro police, Jamiah Smith of Locust was driving a Honda Accord south on Freeman Mill Road toward I-40 West around 4:17 a.m. Sunday when the crash happened.
Investigators said the car left the roadway, flipped over and stopped on the ramp from U.S. 220 North to I-40 West.
One twin died Monday evening after being critically hurt in the crash
Smith and her three children, a 9-year-old and 1-year-old twins, were taken by ambulance to a hospital. Police said one of the twins was critically injured and was not properly secured in a child restraint seat.
That child died Monday evening from crash-related injuries. The other two children were treated and released the same day as the wreck.
Smith faces driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle charges
Greensboro police said Smith is charged with driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle, two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, two counts of child restraint violations, possession of an open container of alcohol and failure to maintain lane control.
The Greensboro Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.
