OSAGE, IA — Two North Iowa men were injured Monday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 9 in Mitchell County, and one of them was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Iowa State Patrol says the wreck happened just after 4 p.m. near the intersection with River Road.
How the crash unfolded
Troopers said a westbound 2008 Pontiac Solstice driven by Jay Schaub, 66, of Grafton, hit the rear of a westbound 2019 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Jason Elgin, 43, of Rudd. After that impact, the Solstice crossed into the path of an eastbound 2015 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Hakkon Rosendahl, 37, of Osage.
The Solstice then struck the eastbound pickup head-on, according to the crash report. The Iowa State Patrol did not release any additional details about what led up to the initial rear-end collision.
Injuries and hospital care
Schaub suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Mitchell County Regional Health System. Elgin was also taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash report did not say whether Rosendahl was hurt. Officials did not provide an update on the condition of either hospitalized driver after they were transported.
Agencies at the scene
The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell County EMS, and Osage Towing & Repair all assisted at the scene. The Iowa State Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.
The collision happened on a busy stretch of Highway 9, and investigators have not said whether citations or charges are expected.
