Wicked origins
Wicked has come a long way since its humble beginnings on Broadway. From its early days as a scrappy underdog to its current status as a cultural phenomenon, it’s hard to believe how far it’s come. And yet, despite its many successes, Wicked remains a deeply personal and emotional experience, one that continues to touch hearts and minds around the world.
Wicked music
When it came to composing a powerful anthem for Elphaba, the misunderstood witch, the creators of WICKED faced more than a few challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was finding a way to capture Elphaba’s emotional journey in a single song. She’s a complex character, to say the least – a mix of vulnerability, anger, and determination – and the songwriters knew they had to get it just right.
Lyrics
According to Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist behind WICKED, the initial inspiration for ‘Defying Gravity’ came from a rather unexpected source – the music of Queen. Schwartz wanted to write a song that would evoke the same sense of grandeur and drama as some of Queen’s most iconic hits, while still staying true to the story and characters of WICKED.
Original OZ Symbolism
One of the most striking aspects of ‘Defying Gravity’ is its use of symbolism. The song is full of clever references to the Wizard of Oz, with Elphaba embracing her witches’ hat and broomstick as symbols of her newfound power. These details add a layer of depth to the song, making it feel both deeply personal and culturally resonant.
Conclusion
The moment ‘Defying Gravity’ became a cultural phenomenon was a turning point not only for WICKED but for musical theater as a whole. Suddenly, this song about a misunderstood witch was speaking to people from all walks of life, inspiring them to embrace their own identities and defy the expectations of others.
