MITCHELL, SD — Three people from Mitchell were hurt, including one teenager with life-threatening injuries, in a single-vehicle crash Friday evening in rural Davison County. The South Dakota Highway Patrol said all five people in the vehicle got out before emergency crews arrived.
How the crash happened
Emergency responders were called around 6 p.m. to 255th Street and Jim River Road, about 2.5 miles east of Mitchell, after reports that a vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Investigators said an 18-year-old Mitchell man was driving a 2010 Dodge Caliber eastbound on 255th Street when he failed to make a curve and lost control.
The vehicle went into the north ditch, rolled over and caught fire. The Highway Patrol said all of the information released so far is preliminary.
Injuries and response
The driver suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. A 16-year-old male passenger was reported with life-threatening injuries, and an 18-year-old female passenger had serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Two 15-year-old female passengers were not injured. At least one patient was later flown to a Sioux Falls hospital, according to the report.
Agencies on scene
Emergency crews were assisted by the Hanson County Sheriff’s Office, Davison County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Police Department, Mitchell Fire Department and Alexandria Fire Department. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
Officials said seat belt use remains under investigation. All five occupants were from Mitchell.
