MILAN, MN — A 47-year-old Milan woman was killed Monday evening in a crash at an intersection in rural Chippewa County, and five children were among the six people hurt. The Minnesota State Patrol says a pickup and an SUV collided shortly after 6:45 p.m. at Highway 59 and Chippewa County Road 32.
The SUV driver died at the scene or from her injuries after the wreck. The crash happened about 45 miles west of Willmar.
Crash details
According to the state crash report, the SUV was traveling north on County Road 32 while the pickup was heading south on Highway 59 when the vehicles struck each other. The woman who died was driving the SUV, and her name has not yet been released.
The patrol said the pickup driver was identified as 22-year-old Isaac Alfred Greenhagen of Maple Lake. He was not injured, though he was taken to a hospital.
Children taken to hospitals
Three girls ages 7, 8 and 13 and two boys ages 7 and 10 were riding in the SUV. The State Patrol said all five children were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said the 7-year-old girl, 8-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy were not wearing seat belts. It was not known whether the other children or the driver were buckled.
What investigators said
A 37-year-old passenger in the pickup, Dairi Cortezdacosta, was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The State Patrol said more information about the crash is expected to be released Friday.
The collision adds to the long list of serious crashes on Minnesota roads, though officials have not said yet what caused this one. Authorities are still working to complete the report.
