We were on an autumn road trip to Bancroft, and passed their (old) location – a giant blue building northeast of Peterborough.  From that moment on, it has become necessary to visit whenever we are in Peterborough. Their current location sits in a simple building in Peterborough, but the moment you step inside, you get it. The smell alone could convince anyone to stay. Warm pastry. Brown sugar. Butter is doing its best work.

The place feels friendly and unfussy. Locals swing in for a quick box. Travellers hover by the counter, trying to act calm while their eyes dart between flavours. The staff moves with that easy confidence of people who know their product is good. The treats all look like they were made by someone who actually enjoys baking.  Despite the name, nothing here feels factory-made. You can see the handwork in every edge and swirl.

This bakery isn’t trying to be trendy or flashy. It’s all about the basics done really well. Good ingredients. Real technique. Zero shortcuts. And a whole lot of pride in a classic Canadian treat. Each one has that crackly, caramelized edge that bakers dream about. The cream-filled doughnuts are even wilder. They’re stuffed with housemade cream that’s so fresh it practically tries to escape. We never leave without buying a couple – lemon, raspberry, strawberry rhubarb, etc.  We always enjoy a cream puff donut on the Drive to Marmora – it’s messy, but worth it. These are the kind of doughnuts that break diets and ruin willpower. And honestly, they’re worth every bite. Their Cheese biscuits are also a must.
