POYNETTE, WI — A 58-year-old Winnebago man was arrested Sunday evening after a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper says he was driving erratically on Interstate 39 and came close to striking other vehicles and guardrails. The stop happened at a gas station just west of Poynette, where officials say the driver was taken into custody on an 11th OWI offense.
How the stop unfolded
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the driver was first seen southbound on I-39 in Marquette around 6 p.m. Officials said he could not keep his vehicle in a lane while driving a black GMC Yukon.
WisDOT said the SUV nearly hit other vehicles and guard rails before a state trooper located it in Columbia County. The trooper then pulled the driver over at the Loves Travel Stop west of Poynette.
Prior convictions and probation
Officials said the man was on probation tied to 10 earlier OWI convictions. The latest arrest adds another drunken-driving case to a record that already included multiple past offenses.
State authorities did not release further details about the arrest in the information provided. No injuries were reported in the source material.
Investigation remains open
The case is still under review, according to officials. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the investigation is ongoing.
The arrest took place in Columbia County, with the reported driving problems beginning in nearby Marquette. The location and timing put the incident along one of the main north-south routes in south-central Wisconsin.
