MARLBOROUGH, MA — The two people killed in a car crash that closed Interstate 290 east in Marlborough on Monday have been identified as a mother and her adult son.
The highway was shut down at Exit 30, creating backups that lasted for hours while authorities responded to the scene.
Victims identified by Middlesex District Attorney’s Office
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said Thursday that the victims were Mark Leakeas, 59, of Tyngsborough, and Arlene Leakeas, 79, of Dracut.
Officials said the pair were mother and son. No further information about their relationship or the circumstances of their trip was immediately released.
Investigators have released few details about the wreck
Authorities have not shared a detailed account of what caused the crash. The investigation remains limited in what has been disclosed publicly.
What was visible at the scene included a damaged SUV facing the wrong direction on the highway and another SUV in the median near the tree line.
Scene footage showed debris scattered across the roadway
Images from the crash site also showed what appeared to be papers scattered across the road near the vehicles.
The scene suggested a serious impact, but officials have not said how many vehicles were involved or whether anything else may have contributed to the collision.
Traffic on Interstate 290 resumed after the closure
The eastbound shutdown caused significant congestion as drivers were forced to wait for the roadway to reopen.
