ORANGE CITY, IA — A Sheldon man is facing two felony counts after Sioux County authorities say an undercover online investigation led to his arrest Monday afternoon. The sheriff’s office says 49-year-old Christopher Kopel was taken into custody on Aug. 3 at 1:41 p.m.
Investigators say the case involved explicit conversations with an undercover deputy who was posing as a 15-year-old boy.
How the case developed
Court records say the deputy was using Grindr as part of the investigation. According to those documents, age was discussed and confirmed more than once during the exchange.
Authorities say the conversation continued until Kopel allegedly asked to meet for an unlawful act. That interaction led deputies to move in and make the arrest.
Charges filed against Kopel
Kopel now faces one count of grooming and one count of enticing a minor under 16. He was booked into the Sioux County Jail after the arrest.
The sheriff’s office has not released any additional details about the investigation beyond what was included in the court documents and arrest report.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation, and the Sheldon Police Department assisted with the incident. Officials have not said whether any further charges are expected.
