BLOOMINGTON, MN — A fatal crash on Interstate 494 in Bloomington is under investigation after a Jeep Grand Cherokee and Honda CR-V collided early Saturday morning. Minnesota State Patrol says the Jeep driver, 64-year-old Vernon Chu of Shakopee, later died from his injuries.
The crash happened at 4:18 a.m. westbound on I-494 near Highway 100. State Patrol says the Jeep was then hit by a semi after the first collision.
How the crash unfolded
According to investigators, the Honda was traveling west in the far right lane and the Jeep was in the center-right lane when the two vehicles made contact. The Honda came to rest in the right lane near construction cones, while the Jeep stopped in the left lane with its grille against the median.
After that initial impact, a 49-year-old man driving a semi westbound struck the Jeep. The collision left the Jeep facing north in the left lane.
Driver identified by patrol
State Patrol identified the Jeep driver as Vernon Chu, 64, of Shakopee. Officials said he was pronounced dead after the crash.
The agency has not released additional details about what led to the collision. The crash remains under investigation.
Other people injured
The Honda was driven by a 25-year-old man, with a 24-year-old woman riding as a passenger. State Patrol said both suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
No other injuries were reported in the information released by investigators. The sequence of events took place in the early morning hours, when traffic was light and the highway area included construction cones.
