ESTHERVILLE, IA — One person was killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash Friday evening in Emmet County. The Iowa State Patrol said the collision happened at 6:42 p.m. in the 4100 block of Highway 9, east of Estherville.
Authorities identified the driver who died as 41-year-old John James Bumgart of Armstrong. The injured driver was identified as 50-year-old Karie Marie Eisma of Hawarden, Iowa.
How the Crash Unfolded
According to the state patrol report, Bumgart was driving a 1996 GM pickup westbound on Highway 9 east of 410th Avenue. Eisma was driving a 2020 Peterbilt semi eastbound on the same stretch of road.
For reasons that remain unclear, the pickup crossed the centerline and struck the semi. After the impact, the pickup came to rest in the north ditch while the semi ended up in the south ditch and became fully engulfed in flames.
Victim And Injury Details
Bumgart was pronounced dead at the scene. The report said Eisma was taken to a local hospital by Estherville Ambulance.
No additional details about the extent of Eisma’s injuries were included in the information released from the crash.
Investigation Continues
The state patrol did not say what caused the pickup to enter the oncoming lane. That part of the crash remains under investigation.
Highway 9 east of Estherville was the site of the collision, and the wreck left both vehicles off the roadway after the impact.
