LAKOTA, ND — A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 1 near Lakota left one person dead Friday afternoon. The North Dakota Highway Patrol said the collision happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. on May 8.
The crash involved a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2000 Buick LeSabre. Lakota is about 63 miles west of Grand Forks.
How the crash unfolded
According to the Highway Patrol report, the Tahoe was traveling west on Highway 2 while the LeSabre was stopped on Highway 1 and heading north. Investigators said the LeSabre crossed Highway 2 and failed to yield to the Tahoe.
The Tahoe struck the passenger side of the LeSabre in a T-bone crash. Both vehicles were equipped with seat belts, and all three people in the Tahoe were wearing them.
Driver of LeSabre dies
The driver of the LeSabre, a 93-year-old Lakota man, died in the crash. The driver of the Tahoe was a 41-year-old Grand Forks woman, and her two young passengers were not hurt.
Authorities said none of the names have been released yet by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Investigation continues
The North Dakota State Patrol is still investigating the crash. No additional details were immediately released about whether charges or further findings are expected.
The report says all occupants were buckled up at the time of the collision.
