Having just returned from Vienna and their dozens of Christmas Markets. I wanted to pass on some tips for the 2025 season.
Without doubt Vienna has to be a top player when it comes to the Christmas Market. Not only are they numerous but also varied too.
Themed to appeal to almost every visitor and they can be found not only outside of the major palaces. But also around tiny church precincts all over the city too.
The main focus for the city has to be at Rathausplaz or in front of the Town Hall on the main Ring Strasse.
With or without snow there is always some sort of meandering skating rink course running around a large section of the garden in front of the building.
Joined by rows upon row of wooden huts selling decorations, food, candles and all the other products that are required items for the festive season.
Cash In At The Christmas Market
Cash does seem to be king at many of the markets. There are usually a good number of cash machines available within the markets themselves which helps us visitors and the traders perfectly. A nice touch!
For my own list I would suggest that you visit of course the Rathaus.
Then: Schönbrunn
Belvedere Palace
Karlsplatz
Maria Theresien Platz
St Stephens Cathedral
Am Hof
Altweiner (The Freyung)
Riesenrad Ferris Wheel Market
The season for the markets extends from the second week in November until various dates just around the Christmas holiday itself. The 23rd December for some others its 26th and places like Schonbrunn extends into early January.
Book For Christmas Markets For 2025
This length of time period can help with holiday bookings and hotel availability. Most markets in 2024 started around 15th or 16th with two earlier on the 8th November.
