Dance is a sport. Dance is an art. Dance is a hobby. Dance is a lot of choreography. People everywhere have many different opinions on what dance is. So, what’s the truth? Let’s find out.
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionaries, dance is “to move one’s body rhythmically usually to music : to engage in or perform a dance.” In my opinion, this is technically true. Dancers do move rhythmically to music, but, there is more to dance than just that. What about a hard work ethic?
According to Dictionary.com, dance is using “prescribed or improvised steps and gestures.” This is also very true. Dancers are given choreography to learn for performances and sometimes have to improve moves as well. But still, there’s more. What about passion?
According to HuffPost, “To be able to dance well, one needs to be flexible, strong, have stamina, have endurance and most importantly have a love for what they do. In any other sport you need to work hard, and that is exactly what dancers do.” This definition is my personal favorite of the three. It demonstrates how much hard work is required to dance, defining it as a sport. I strongly believe that dance is a sport and an art wrapped up in one amazing activity. That’s the truth.
