A pub in Dorset UK is offering a staggering 50% discount off meals if the diners will lock away their mobile phones.
Silent Woman Inn in Dorset has put together a special discount scheme. Only as long as customers agree to keep away from their must-do social media posts.
Their aim is to get customers socialising rather than pushing their social media!
The pub has launched the scheme for Christmas. However, if it works well then it could continue into the New Year too.
With a mention in one of Thomas Hardy’s novels the pub has a history dating back to the 17th century.
Silent Woman Mobile Phone Lock Down
It is located in Wareham Forest, just outside the town of Wareham.
Its owner is hoping that diners will get chatting rather than snapping.
His aim is to get the customers appreciating the whole dining and pub experience. And without the phone taking over the dining experience .
A lockable box is placed on the table. The mobile phones are locked inside but left in sight of the customers. With the key left behind the bar until the meal is over.
Then the diners can get their phones returned as they pay. Here its when they can enjoy that 50% discount. Providing of course they have managed to desert their digital attachment until the end.
Marketing Manager Megan McCann says: “Too often diners spend their time on the phone posting pictures and not enough appreciating the food and ambience of the inn.”
“We devised this ‘Lock Box’ offer to encourage our customers to get social and drop the media!”
Chatter Rather Than Clicks At The Not So Silent Woman
Although called the ‘Silent Woman’ the owner would prefer that it was chatter rather than clicks filling the air.
Once called the Angel Inn it had connections with smuggling.
The story goes it was an earlier landlady and her loose lips that upset the visiting smugglers. Stopping to rest, they would talk of their nefarious activities. And she would chatter to others. Even to the revenue men.
And they decided that a landlady with no tongue would put a stop to her gossiping. From then on the pub has long been known as the ‘Silent Woman’.
Although it appears that the truer version was because of Thomas Hardy’s mention it in ‘The Return of a Native’. He called it The Quiet Lady in the 1920’s and the pub then became ‘The Silent Woman’.
You decide which version. But certainly whichever appeals to you the owner would be more content with verbosity than video from his customers!
The marketing team can certainly take care of that social media stuff for its customers!
