FARGO, ND — A Fargo man died after a late-night crash in north Fargo that followed a brief police attempt to stop his pickup, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Investigators said the driver, identified as 35-year-old Damion Proffit, fled after officers tried to stop him early Saturday, Aug. 8. Authorities said he was later found dead at the crash scene.
Police tried to stop pickup on Broadway North before crash
According to the patrol’s news release, Fargo police first noticed Proffit driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado in the 700 block of Broadway North shortly after midnight. Officers believed he may have been driving with a suspended license.
The release said police did not chase the vehicle after the stop was canceled. A short time later, the pickup crashed in the 1500 block of Dakota Drive near North Dakota State University.
Troopers say Silverado hit a tree and damaged another vehicle
State troopers said the Silverado failed to make a curve, hit a tree and kept going between two apartment buildings. Debris from the crash also struck an unoccupied Honda Element, causing heavy damage to that vehicle.
Authorities said Proffit was wearing a seat belt. He died at the scene.
Highway Patrol is continuing the investigation
The North Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances of the crash. No additional details were immediately released.
The case centers on the sequence of a canceled traffic stop, a short flight from police and the fatal wreck in north Fargo.
