LAUREL COUNTY, KY — A three-vehicle crash on East Fourth Street in Laurel County left one man dead and a woman seriously hurt Thursday afternoon, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say a Ford F-250 pulling a trailer was traveling west when it could not stop behind a pickup truck that was waiting to turn left.
The Ford struck the back of that truck and then crossed the center line, where it hit a Chrysler Medallion head-on. The driver of the Chrysler, 69-year-old Timothy Edwards of East Bernstadt, was flown to UK Medical Center with serious injuries. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office later pronounced him dead.
Crash sequence began when westbound Ford could not stop behind turning pickup
The sheriff’s office says the chain of events started when the Ford F-250, which was towing a trailer, approached a pickup truck that was stopped while waiting to make a left turn. The Ford was unable to stop in time and hit the pickup from behind.
After that impact, investigators say the Ford traveled across the center line and into oncoming traffic. That maneuver put it directly in the path of the Chrysler Medallion and led to the head-on collision that caused the most serious injuries.
Officials have not released additional details about road conditions, speed, or whether any other factors contributed to the crash. The sheriff’s office is still piecing together exactly how the collision unfolded.
Timothy Edwards identified as driver who later died from his injuries
Investigators identified the Chrysler’s driver as Timothy Edwards, a 69-year-old East Bernstadt native. Emergency crews transported him by air to UK Medical Center after the crash because of the seriousness of his injuries.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that Edwards died after being treated for those injuries. Authorities have not said whether he was alone in the vehicle at the time, but they did identify a passenger in the Chrysler as his wife, Susan Edwards.
The crash has drawn attention because of the severity of the head-on impact and the fact that it involved multiple vehicles on a roadway where traffic was already slowed by a left turn.
Susan Edwards remains hospitalized with serious injuries at UK Medical Center
Susan Edwards, 67, was also hurt in the collision and is receiving treatment at UK Medical Center, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials described her injuries as serious.
No further information has been released about her condition, and authorities did not provide details on whether she remained in the same unit or had undergone any procedures. The only confirmed update is that she is still under care at the hospital.
