NARRAGANSETT, RI — A tractor-trailer overturned on Pt. Judith Road in Narragansett on Sunday morning, spilling more than 20 tons of squid across the roadway and shutting down traffic for hours.
State police said the truck tipped onto its side around 9:30 a.m. while negotiating a turn. The driver and a passenger were not injured.
Truck load came loose during a turn
Police said the trailer became dislodged from the cab before it overturned, leaving all lanes of travel blocked.
The truck was carrying squid to a processing facility outside town when the spill happened. Officers said a substantial amount of the cargo ended up on the road.
Road stayed closed until late afternoon
The squid spill caused major traffic disruption and forced an extended closure of the intersection.
Authorities said Pt. Judith Road reopened at about 5:15 p.m., roughly eight hours after the crash.
Driver cited after cleanup and reopening
Rhode Island State Police cited the driver for failure to secure a load. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The case highlights how a single cargo failure can quickly turn into a lengthy roadway closure, especially when a heavy load spills across every lane.
