PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 1-year-old boy was left on a Philadelphia sidewalk after a suspected thief stole his mother’s car while the child was still inside, police said.
Authorities said the incident happened Monday just before 11 p.m., and the baby was later found unharmed shortly after midnight.
Mother placed child in back seat before car was taken
According to police, the boy’s mother had put him into his car seat in the back of the vehicle before the theft. The suspect then got into the car and drove away.
Police said the thief apparently did not realize the child was still in the vehicle at first. The stolen car was described as a Black Honda Accord.
Uncle says family searched the neighborhood after the theft
The boy’s uncle told 6 ABC that the family quickly began looking for the child after realizing the car was gone. He said relatives knocked on doors and ran around the block.
He also told the station, “I came outside and the car was just gone with the baby.” The uncle was not identified in the report.
Police say the child was found safe and no arrests have been made
Authorities said the child was taken out of the car and left on a sidewalk along a highway. Police told The National News Desk that the boy was found on the highway unharmed.
No arrests have been announced. Investigators are collecting fingerprints from the stolen car and reviewing surveillance footage, and police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
