FARGO, ND — A Fargo man died after crashing his vehicle shortly after officers tried to stop him for driving on a suspended license, according to the North Dakota State Patrol.
Investigators say the driver fled and later crashed in Fargo. Police found the wrecked vehicle in the 1500 block of Dakota Drive, where the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers say the stop happened shortly after midnight
The attempted traffic stop happened just after midnight on Aug. 8 in the 700 block of Broadway North, state patrol officials said. The agency said officers knew the man was driving with a suspended license.
According to NDSP, the driver did not stop and left the area. Officers did not pursue him, the patrol said.
Police found the crashed vehicle on Dakota Drive
A Fargo police officer later located the vehicle after it had already crashed. Investigators said it struck a tree and then continued between two apartment buildings before coming to rest.
The driver died from injuries sustained in the crash, authorities said.
Debris damaged an unoccupied car but no one else was hurt
Debris from the wreck hit an unoccupied vehicle and caused extensive damage, according to the report. No other damage was reported.
The crash did not injure anyone besides the driver, and authorities identified the victim as 35-year-old Damion Proffit of Fargo.
