FREEMAN, SD — A 77-year-old Bridgewater woman died Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash about eight miles northwest of Freeman, authorities said. The collision happened at 11:32 a.m. at an intersection with Highway 44.
Officials said the woman was driving north on 435th Avenue when she reached a stop sign at Highway 44. Her SUV was hit by a westbound semi truck, and the woman suffered fatal injuries.
How the crash happened
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety said the woman was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. At the same time, a 29-year-old man from Armour was driving a 1996 Kenworth TT semi truck on Highway 44.
According to authorities, the Equinox entered the intersection and was struck by the semi. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, officials said.
Road closed after collision
Highway 44 was closed for several hours after the crash. The closure affected traffic in the area while investigators worked at the scene.
The names of the people involved have not been released because family members still needed to be notified.
Investigation continues
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. No further details were immediately released.
