SUPERIOR, WI — Two people were killed Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while standing near a parked flatbed truck and trailer on County Highway A in the Town of Superior, according to Douglas County authorities. The crash was reported at 7:54 a.m. about a quarter mile south of Larson Road on July 7, 2026.
The victims were identified as Martha Lippai, 62, of Superior, and Devern Bender, 36, of Barron. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
How the crash happened
Investigators said Lippai was having a wooden storage shed delivered to her property by Bender. The two were standing at the rear of the truck and trailer parked along northbound CTH A when a northbound Honda Pilot hit them.
After striking the pedestrians, the SUV crashed into the back of the trailer. Authorities said the driver was a 34-year-old woman from the Town of Summit.
Driver taken to hospital
The driver had to be extricated from the Honda Pilot and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported in the crash.
CTH A was closed for several hours between Larson Road and Half Mile Road while investigators reconstructed and cleared the scene.
Investigation remains open
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Medical Examiner’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol are still investigating the crash. Mayo Ambulance, the Towns of Superior and Summit volunteer fire departments, and other first responders assisted at the scene.
Authorities said the report was updated later with additional details from the sheriff’s office.
