IOWA COUNTY, IA — Two people were killed Thursday afternoon in a crash at an Iowa County intersection near Highway 151, and the Iowa State Patrol has now identified both victims. Investigators say the collision happened around 2:45 p.m. when an SUV and a construction vehicle entered the same area near 110th Street.
The patrol said the SUV was headed west on 110th Street toward Highway 151, while the construction vehicle was traveling south on Highway 151 near the intersection.
How the crash happened
According to the preliminary investigation, the SUV did not stop at the stop sign before entering the intersection. That led to the crash between the two vehicles.
After impact, both vehicles ended up in the southwest ditch. The Iowa State Patrol has not released any additional details about speed, visibility or other possible factors.
Victims identified by patrol
The state patrol identified the people who died as 14-year-old Sawyer Havel of North Liberty and 33-year-old Colton Havel of Amana. The report did not specify which person was driving each vehicle.
Both people were wearing seatbelts, according to the patrol.
