OXFORD, MS — Mississippi public safety officials are increasing law enforcement coverage in Oxford ahead of Saturday’s University of Mississippi football game against Louisiana State University. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said the weekend matchup and related festivities are expected to bring thousands of fans and visitors into the area.
Commissioner Sean Tindell said the department is preparing for the crowd with a larger-than-usual deployment of troopers and other personnel. The goal, he said, is to keep traffic moving and help ensure the game weekend remains safe and orderly for everyone traveling to Oxford.
Largest Mississippi Highway Patrol presence planned for the game
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is set to deploy what officials described as its largest presence so far for this game weekend. In all, about 65 to 70 state troopers and Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division officers are expected to work throughout the area.
The department said the added manpower is meant to support travel safety and manage the heavy flow of vehicles around campus and the city. Officials urged visitors to plan ahead, allow extra time on the road and be patient as the area fills up.
Louisiana State Police officers will also join Mississippi units
Mississippi officials said about 10 to 15 Louisiana State Police officers will work alongside local and state law enforcement during the weekend. The department said it regularly coordinates with visiting teams and their protective details to help keep travel and operations running smoothly.
That coordination is part of the larger effort to prepare for one of the biggest traffic and crowd events Oxford sees during the college football season. Officials said the extra staffing is intended to support both public safety and efficient movement around the city.
Special operations, air support and mobile command deployed
In addition to troopers on the ground, the department said it will activate its Special Operations Group, Air Operations and Mobile Command center. Those resources are often used when agencies expect a large event that may require quick communication and broad oversight.
By adding those units, officials said they can monitor conditions more closely and respond faster if traffic, access or safety issues arise. The department did not identify any specific threat, but framed the increased presence as a proactive step for the weekend.
Oxford police and the university are part of the coordination
State officials said the Mississippi Department of Public Safety is working with the University Police Department and the Oxford Police Department to line up public safety and traffic management plans. The city, university and state agencies are all part of the same weekend preparation effort.
Tindell thanked the officers, troopers and partner agencies for the coordination. He said the expectation is that people coming to Oxford will help by planning ahead, being cautious on the roads and contributing to a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.
Game-day crowd expected to strain roads and campus area
The department said the matchup has drawn significant attention because of the expected crowd size and surrounding events. That level of interest typically places added pressure on roadways, parking and other access points near the university.
Officials said the law enforcement plan is designed to stay ahead of those demands rather than react after problems develop. The message from public safety leaders is that the weekend will require teamwork from officers, university staff, and the fans arriving for the game.
