OCEANA COUNTY, MI — A 17-year-old died after a side-by-side rollover crash early Sunday morning in Oceana County, and the 18-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated causing death. Deputies said the crash involved a Honda Pioneer 1000 carrying six people on private property in Golden Township.
The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office said Mason-Oceana 911 received the call around 12:39 a.m. on North 28th Avenue. First responders tried to revive the teen passenger, later identified as Luke William Kooistra of Ada, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the other occupants did not suffer injuries that required immediate medical treatment.

The sheriff’s office said the Honda Pioneer 1000 side-by-side rolled over on private property, and the incident is still under investigation. Investigators have not released a detailed account of what led to the overturn, and no additional crash factors were provided in the initial statement.
Because the scene was on private property, the case is being handled differently than a typical roadway crash, but authorities have not said whether speed, terrain or alcohol were among the factors they are examining. The arrest was made after deputies responded to the scene and gathered initial information.

Deputies identified the victim as Luke William Kooistra of Ada. According to the sheriff’s office, he was the 17-year-old passenger who was seriously injured when the vehicle rolled over.
Emergency crews attempted resuscitation at the scene, but those efforts were not successful. The teen was pronounced dead where the crash occurred.
The sheriff’s office said the crash left the remaining passengers without injuries that required immediate medical care. Officials did not release any further information about the condition of the others.
