PHILADELPHIA, PA — A bystander says she kicked a masked man in the chest after he turned his attention toward her during a frightening encounter tied to a string of reported incidents in Philadelphia. The woman, identified as Jameka in an interview with ABC7, said she first tried to warn a jogger who was being followed before the suspect moved toward her. She said she screamed for help and then struck back when she believed he had no clear target.
Police say the man is wanted in connection with terroristic threats, simple assault and related offenses. Investigators believe he may have recorded the encounters, though it is not clear whether the incidents were connected to any social media trend. Residents are being told to call 911 immediately if they see him and to stay away from him.
Police say the suspect chased a 40-year-old woman and threatened to kill her
The Philadelphia Police Department said one of the reported encounters happened around 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 12. In that incident, officers say the suspect chased a 40-year-old woman and made threatening remarks, including, “Are you ready to die?”
Police described the suspect as a Black male believed to be between 16 and 20 years old. He was reportedly wearing a white baby doll style Halloween mask with black hair and carrying a black and blue plaid backpack. Authorities have not said what led to the encounter or where exactly the chase began, but they say the victim was threatened during the pursuit.
The department has linked that episode to other reports from the same morning, which helped prompt the public warning. Officials have not said whether the woman was physically injured during the chase.
Jameka says the masked man seemed confused before she fought back
In her account to ABC7, Jameka said she was trying to help when the suspect shifted his attention from the jogger to her. She said the man appeared disoriented and did not seem focused on taking anything from her, even though she had bags with her at the time.
That uncertainty, she said, made her decide to test whether he would fight back. “So I was like, ‘Okay, well, let’s see if you can fight,’ and he couldn’t,” she told the outlet. Her account adds a personal view of the confrontation that police have described as part of a larger set of threats and assaults.
The woman’s description also underscores why police are warning people not to try to confront the suspect themselves. Instead, they say anyone who spots him should contact emergency dispatch right away.
Investigators are reviewing whether the masked encounters were filmed for social media
Police believe the suspect may have recorded the confrontations, which has raised questions about whether the episodes were staged for online attention. Investigators have not confirmed that theory, and they have not said whether a social media trend was involved.
What is known so far is that officers are treating the morning incidents as serious criminal matters. The charges being sought include terroristic threats and simple assault, along with related offenses. That means police are focusing both on the reported threats and on the physical confrontation described by the bystander.
For now, the department’s message is straightforward: do not approach the masked suspect. Anyone who sees him is urged to call 911 immediately so officers can respond safely.
