CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — A Cedar Rapids man is accused of stabbing another man about a dozen times early Saturday in a hallway at The Heights apartment complex, according to a Linn County criminal complaint. The victim was taken to a hospital, and police say the encounter was captured on surveillance video.
What Police Say Happened
Authorities say the confrontation happened at The Heights, 1500 Second Ave. SE, and involved 34-year-old Gavin D.V. Miller. According to the complaint, video shows Miller shoving the man out of an apartment and into the hallway before making stabbing motions toward the victim’s upper body.
Police said the victim was in a defensive posture during the attack, and blood was seen throughout the hallway. The complaint says the man suffered about a dozen stab wounds.
Arrest Near Campus
Officers later found Miller wandering near student apartments on the Coe College campus. Police and the complaint say he was shoeless and had blood on his hands when they encountered him.
Cedar Rapids Police Department arrest records show he was taken into custody after the incident. The case was documented in both the criminal complaint and arrest records.
Charges And Next Steps
Miller was booked into the Linn County Jail on suspicion of willful injury resulting in serious injury and public intoxication. Willful injury resulting in serious injury is a Class C felony, which carries a possible sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
The public intoxication charge is a simple misdemeanor. The complaint does not say what led up to the confrontation inside the apartment complex.
