FARMINGTON, MN — Farmington police have narrowed their search for the vehicle involved in a July 14 fatal hit-and-run, saying the driver may have been behind the wheel of a silver or gray 2008 to 2011 Ford Focus. Investigators said the update came after surveillance video added new details to what witnesses first described as a darker vehicle.
The crash happened about 9:44 p.m. near Minnesota Highway 50 and Dushane Parkway, by the McDonald’s restaurant. Police said two juvenile boys were crossing the highway when one, who was riding a bicycle, was struck and killed by the westbound vehicle.
Vehicle details updated
Capt. Bob Sauter said the department now believes the suspect car matches a Ford Focus from the 2008 to 2011 model years. Police also said the vehicle is expected to have front-end and passenger-side damage.
Investigators believe it is missing its passenger-side exterior mirror, which was recovered at the scene. The department released a stock photo of a Ford Focus and posted the new information on social media July 14.
Witness accounts and evidence
Sauter said the first color description came from a witness, and that color mistakes are common in stressful situations. He said the newer surveillance video gave police a clearer picture of the vehicle than the original reports.
Police have not publicly identified a driver and said the case remains an active investigation. Sauter said investigators are continuing to work through the evidence gathered so far.
Police ask for tips
Farmington police are asking anyone who saw the crash or has seen a vehicle matching the description to call 651-280-6700. Sauter said even small details could help investigators identify the driver.
He also urged the driver to come forward. Sauter said taking responsibility could help the victim’s family find closure, while police continue working to hold the driver accountable.
