HOUSTON, TX — Houston police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after four people were found dead during a welfare check at a home in the River Oaks area. Authorities said the victims were Thy Mitchell, her husband Matthew Mitchell, and their two children, ages 4 and 8.
A spokesperson confirmed the couple was tied to Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart, two popular restaurants in the city. Police identified Matthew Mitchell, 52, as the suspect in the case.
Restaurant community reacts to loss of prominent hospitality couple
The Mitchells were widely known in Houston’s dining scene and also operated a clothing brand. Their death has drawn an outpouring of grief from restaurant owners, chefs, and friends across the city.
Thy Mitchell was described by colleagues as the public face of the businesses and someone deeply involved in the local restaurant community.
Texas Restaurant Association had named them 2025 Restaurateurs of the Year
Last year, the Houston chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association honored the Mitchells as its 2025 Restaurateurs of the Year. Association leaders said Thy Mitchell had recently been asked to join the chapter’s board because of her energy and ideas.
One association president said the couple had hosted a social event that drew dozens of restaurateurs and reflected what many saw as a successful partnership.
Police say no prior domestic violence calls were reported at the home
According to Houston police, there were no prior domestic violence calls to the residence. County court records also showed no earlier civil lawsuits or criminal investigations involving the couple before the shooting.
Friends and colleagues have left flowers, photos, and other tributes outside the family home as the investigation continues. Police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators.
