Norse Mythology Connection
How to train your dragon is based in Viking Norse mythology. In Norse mythology dragons are powerful, magical creatures, embodying the concepts of chaos and destruction. This resulted in dragons decorating Viking, shields, ships and other accessories to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies.
Dragons in Norst Mythology
Dragons played an integral part in Norse mythology. From Nidhogg, the dragon in the base of the tree of life Yggdrasil to the dragon “Fafnir” a dwarf transformed into a dragon due to his greed. Vikings referred to dragons as “Dreki”, an Old Norse term commonly used for sea monsters, sea serpents, and dragons. This is similar to “Drake” in Old English, morphing into the term Dragons we use today.

History of the Toothless dance meme
So how did Toothless become a dance meme? Just like the inspiration for the Viking dragons, the meme came from a lizard. In 2018 a dancing lizard meme hit the internet to a variety of songs. The most memorable song was the theme from Pokémon: Black & White By “Driftveil City”. This is the inspiration for Cas van de Pol to use it in the animation.
