MONROE COUNTY, OH — A head-on collision on State Route 7 in Monroe County killed a 54-year-old Clarington man Tuesday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened in Salem Township near milepost 21 and involved two vehicles: a 2002 Subaru Outback and a 2007 Ford Focus. The driver of the Ford, Duff Mahoney, suffered fatal injuries.
Authorities said the Subaru crossed left of center and hit the Ford head-on in the southbound lane. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.
Troopers say the Subaru crossed into the southbound lane
The highway patrol said the Subaru Outback was traveling northbound when it moved left of center. It then struck the Ford Focus, which was traveling southbound, directly in the opposing lane.
That sequence turned the crash into a head-on collision, one of the most dangerous types of roadway wrecks because the force of impact is concentrated in the front of both vehicles. The patrol did not say what caused the Subaru to leave its lane.
Investigators have not released information about speed, road conditions or whether any other factors may have played a role. The collision remained under investigation after troopers responded to the scene.
Duff Mahoney identified as the driver killed in the wreck
The driver of the Ford Focus was identified as Duff Mahoney of Clarington. He was 54 years old, according to the patrol.
Troopers said Mahoney died as a result of injuries from the crash. No additional details about the condition of the Subaru driver were included in the information released by authorities.
Because the crash involved only two vehicles, investigators will likely focus on each vehicle’s position, lane travel and impact point as they work through the reconstruction of what happened.
Seat belts were in use as emergency crews rushed to the scene
