BOZEMAN, MT — A man was arrested Monday morning after a SWAT standoff at a home on Saxon Way in Bozeman that followed an early stabbing, according to the Bozeman Police Department.
Police said they first responded to a local medical center around 3:30 a.m. after a report that an adult man had arrived with stab wounds. Investigators later determined the victim had been stabbed by a roommate at a residence in the 5000 block of Saxon Way. The injured man is expected to survive.
Police traced the stabbing to a roommate dispute at a Saxon Way home
Bozeman police said their investigation linked the stabbing to a residence in the 5000 block of Saxon Way. The department identified the attacker only as a roommate, and officials have not released further details about what led to the violence.
The victim’s arrival at the medical center set the investigation in motion before officers narrowed the location down to the home. Police did not say how many people were inside the residence when the stabbing happened, but the case quickly became a major response because the suspect remained inside afterward.
SWAT team called after suspect barricaded inside a bedroom
Once officers reached the residence, police say the man inside barricaded himself in a bedroom. That prompted a response from the Gallatin County Special Weapons and Tactics team, along with Bozeman police.
The standoff unfolded on a residential street during the morning hours, drawing multiple agencies to the scene. Officials did not report any additional injuries during the barricade, and no force beyond the coordinated police response was described in the information released by BPD.
Arrest made at about 8:50 a.m. and attempted homicide charge filed
Police said the man was taken into custody without further incident at about 8:50 a.m. He was then booked into the Gallatin County Detention Center on an attempted homicide charge.
The timeline indicates the incident stretched across several hours, beginning with the medical center call around 3:30 a.m. and ending with the arrest before midmorning. Authorities have not said whether the suspect suffered any injuries or provided details about the weapon used in the stabbing.
Multiple agencies assisted during the response in southwest Bozeman
Bozeman Police Deputy Chief Joe Swanson thanked several agencies for helping during the incident, including the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Montana State University Police Department, Bozeman Fire Department, American Medical Response and Gallatin County 911.
Swanson also thanked nearby residents for their patience and cooperation while the scene was active. The multi-agency response underscored how quickly a domestic-style assault can escalate into a larger public safety operation when a suspect refuses to come out of a home.
What Bozeman police have said so far about the case
As of the department’s update, the victim remained expected to recover, and the suspect was in custody at the county jail. Police have not released the man’s name or given a more detailed account of the relationship between the two residents beyond saying they were roommates.
The Bozeman Police Department has also not said what may have triggered the stabbing or whether prosecutors will add more charges. The case now appears to be moving through the local criminal justice process after the hours-long response ended.
