CHICAGO, IL — A car plunged into Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago early Saturday, leaving three men injured after the vehicle went into the water near DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Chicago police said the crash happened just before 1 a.m. in the Streeterville neighborhood, in the 800-block of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
Police said the black two-door vehicle lost control before entering the lake. All three men inside were able to get out of the car and swim to shore. Ambulances were seen at the scene as crews responded to the crash.
One rider taken to Northwestern Memorial with shoulder injury
Police said a 26-year-old man suffered a dislocated shoulder and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition. The other two occupants, both 19-year-old men, were also transported to Northwestern Memorial.
Those two men had minor injuries and were listed in fair condition, police said. Officials did not immediately identify any of the people in the car.
Crash happened in Streeterville near the lakefront roadway
The incident unfolded in Streeterville, a downtown neighborhood along Chicago’s lakefront. The stretch of DuSable Lake Shore Drive where the crash occurred is one of the city’s busiest routes and runs close to the edge of Lake Michigan.
Video from the scene showed emergency vehicles responding after the car went into the water. Police did not say what caused the driver to lose control, and they did not immediately provide additional details about the sequence of events.
Authorities have not said what led to the vehicle entering the water
By Saturday morning, police had not released further information about whether speed, weather, or another factor played a role. They also did not say whether any other vehicles were involved.
The crash adds to a small number of dramatic lakefront rescues that can unfold quickly when a vehicle ends up in the water. In this case, the men were able to escape before first responders completed the hospital transports.
