CUMBERLAND, RI — At least two people were killed Thursday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 295 and forced police to divert traffic in Cumberland.
Officials said the victims were taken to Rhode Island Hospital after the crash, which involved a truck rollover and an ion battery fire.
Crash happened near the Mendon Road and Diamond Hill Road exits
The wreck was reported around 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 20 between the Mendon Road and Diamond Hill Road exits, according to officials.

State police diverted traffic onto Route 146 as lanes remained closed
Rhode Island State Police said around 5 p.m. that traffic was being detoured onto Route 146 because of the closure on I-295 north.
Cumberland police also reported that I-295 south was affected, with traffic moving slowly through the area while crews responded.
Officials urged drivers to find alternate routes during the evening rush
Police advised motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the investigation and cleanup continued.
