Some hikes test your legs. Others test your nerves. Half Dome in Yosemite and Angels Landing in Zion are two of the most talked about trails in the country, both known for jaw dropping views and the kind of exposure that makes even seasoned hikers pause. One traveler, who describes herself as genuinely terrified of heights, decided to attempt both, and the experience left her with some strong opinions.
Angels Landing, Zion National Park
Of the two, Angels Landing felt more manageable. The exposure is still intense, with steep drop offs on either side of the trail, but the path itself felt less slippery and less steep underfoot. She made it all the way to the summit, and the views from the top made the nerves along the way feel worth it.
Half Dome, Yosemite National Park
Half Dome told a different story. The famous cable section is steep and demanding, requiring real grip strength just to hold on as you climb the smooth granite surface. Partway up, the fear became too much, and she made the decision to turn around before reaching the top, a reminder that knowing your limits on a trail like this is just as important as the climb itself.
So Which One Is Scarier?
For her, Half Dome felt both scary and genuinely dangerous, while Angels Landing felt more intimidating than risky. Two iconic hikes, two very different experiences, and honestly, that might be exactly what makes them both worth talking about.
A Quick Note Before You Go
Both of these trails involve extreme exposure and should only be attempted by those who feel comfortable with heights and challenging terrain. Always check current trail conditions before heading out, and never push past what feels safe in the moment.
If you’ve hiked either of these trails, which one do you think is scarier?
