EVANSVILLE, MN — A second person has died after a head-on crash in a road work zone on Interstate 94 near Evansville, and another person remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The Minnesota State Patrol said the crash happened just before 4 p.m. Sunday, July 20, in Grant County.
The three-vehicle crash involved drivers and passengers from Minnesota and North Dakota. Traffic in the area was disrupted for about three hours after the wreck.
How the crash unfolded
Investigators said the crash happened in a work zone with head-to-head traffic on a roughly 12-mile stretch of I-94. Preliminary findings show a Tesla Model Y driven by Harold Ennulat and a Ford Fusion driven by Koleman John Lind collided head-on.
A Toyota Crown Signia driven by Debra Lea Middleton then struck the other vehicles after the first impact, according to the State Patrol. Middleton was not hurt.
Victims and injuries
Lind, 24, of Jamestown, North Dakota, initially survived the crash but later died from his injuries, the patrol said Tuesday. Harold Ennulat, 73, of Woodbury, Minnesota, was killed in the crash.
Ennulat’s 65-year-old passenger, Kari Deann Ennulat, also of Woodbury, was taken to a hospital in St. Cloud with life-threatening injuries. Authorities said she was still hospitalized as of Tuesday morning.
Response and aftermath
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Ashby Fire Department and Ambulance, North Memorial Emergency Medical Services, Evansville Fire Department and Lifelink air ambulance all responded to the scene. The Minnesota Department of Transportation said the work zone covers an approximate 12-mile stretch of interstate.
The University of Jamestown said Lind worked as a graduate assistant with the women’s basketball program, led the junior varsity team and was working toward a master’s degree in leadership. A fundraising site has been set up to help with hospital bills and funeral expenses.
