HARRIS TOWNSHIP, MN — Two women were killed Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash on Highway 169 in Itasca County. The collision happened near Victory Lane in Harris Township around 12:30 p.m., according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
How The Crash Happened
State Patrol investigators said a 2017 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound when it collided with a southbound 2009 Lexus RX. The driver of the Ford was a 24-year-old woman from Luck, Wisconsin, and the driver of the Lexus was an 83-year-old woman from Grand Rapids.
Both drivers died at the scene. Authorities said both women were wearing seat belts, and alcohol is not believed to have played a role.
Investigation Still Open
Officials did not say what caused the vehicles to cross paths in a way that led to the crash. The State Patrol also noted that road conditions were dry at the time.
The reason for the head-on collision has not been released.
Emergency Crews Responded
The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Rapids Police Department, Grand Rapids Fire Department, Cohasset Fire Department, North Memorial Health and the Minnesota Department of Transportation all helped at the scene. The crash adds to a deadly year on Minnesota roads, with at least 158 traffic-related deaths reported so far.
