LUVERNE, MN — A 21-year-old Sioux Falls man was killed early Thursday in a one-vehicle semi rollover on a rural Rock County road near Luverne. A 24-year-old passenger from Hills was hurt and flown to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash was reported at 6:10 a.m. at Rock County 11, also known as 100th Avenue, and 61st Street. The sheriff’s office said the semi went into the ditch and rolled while heading north.
Crash Details
Authorities identified the driver as Drew Metzger, 21, of Sioux Falls. He was driving a 2003 Kenworth semi owned by 213 Farms, LLC, of Luverne.
The passenger was Matthew Peter Renken, 24, of Hills. Investigators said it is not known whether either man was wearing a seatbelt.
What The Truck Was Hauling
The sheriff’s office said the semi was carrying water and farm chemicals. The load was being used to tender a sprayer in a farm field.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to the report. The truck left the roadway before rolling in the ditch.
Investigation Continues
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the rollover. The Minnesota State Patrol, Hills Fire Department, Luverne Fire Department and Rock County Ambulance assisted at the scene.
Sheriff Matthew Sorenson offered condolences to the families and others affected by the crash. Officials have not released any further details about what caused the semi to leave the road.
