ATLANTA, GA — Atlanta metro area was named the top summer travel destination in the U.S. for 2026 in a new WalletHub ranking that weighed affordability, convenience, safety and weather.
The personal finance site said rising household costs are pushing many Americans to rethink summer plans, and that the Atlanta area came out ahead of 100 large metro areas nationwide.
WalletHub Cites Cost And Convenience As The Main Factors
WalletHub said its ranking was designed to measure more than scenery. The report focused on how affordable and easy it is to travel to each destination, while also factoring in safety and weather.
Atlanta earned the highest overall score, followed by Orlando, Florida, and Austin, Texas. WalletHub also noted that peak-summer flights from major cities can cost as little as $317.
Free And Low-Cost Attractions Help Drive Atlanta’s Appeal
Travelers can find a wide range of attractions in the city without spending heavily. Options highlighted by WalletHub include Castleberry Hill Arts District, the Fox Theater, Ponce City Market and day spa visits.
The city also offers major cultural stops such as Georgia Aquarium, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park.
Transit, Dining And Neighborhoods Add To The Trip
Atlanta’s transportation network is a major part of its convenience. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the world’s busiest airport, while MARTA and the Atlanta Streetcar make it easier to move between neighborhoods and downtown attractions.
For dining and nightlife, WalletHub pointed to 11 Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurants, as well as Buckhead, Midtown and Little Five Points. The Atlanta Beltline, New Realm Brewing and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains also add to the city’s summer draw.
Thousand Oaks, California Ranked Last In The Same Survey
Along with naming Atlanta No. 1, WalletHub identified Thousand Oaks, California, as the lowest-ranked metro area in the 2026 list.
The comparison underscores how strongly the Atlanta area scored on price, access and the range of things travelers can do once they arrive.
