Yarn hints for The Handmade Sock Society are less “spoilery” than they are for other collections like Knitvent or The Shawl Society. That’s because we use (surprise!) sock yarn: regular fingering weight/4 ply for all the patterns.
That means it’s super easy to stash dive or substitute your own yarn for any design.
Still, I know a lot of knitters love to knit their own socks in the sample yarn. So I’ll be trying to share yarn information with Handmade Sock Society members a bit before the launch of each sock pattern.
Often the sample yarn indie dyers will create a special update just for us, and when they do, I’ll share that info and a link to their shop. It’s not always possible to sync updates with pattern releases, so sometimes that means a slightly later cast-on. That’s totally okay, the KAL timelines are generous and people knit at their own pace.
For our first secret sock pattern, here’s what you need to know:
This design involves some lace, so a lighter or mid-tone colourway with gentle tonal or speckled variation may be the best choice to show off the stitches.
The yarn I chose to use is a good example:
This is the dreamy “Flourish” colourway from NNK Yarns on their High Twist Merino Cashmere Sock base.
I was completely swept away by the soft tonal depth of this yarn. Dusty pink and peach with whispers of dusky beige and wheat, lightly speckled with magnolia and brown.
This base is such a treat to knit with. The high twist offers wonderful stitch definition, the touch of nylon adds strength, and the ultra-cosy merino/cashmere is just so cushy.
Lisa from NNK is a dear friend and such a talented dyer. She has added several other absolute beauties in the same base that would work perfectly for this design, too. You can just choose your colourway from the dropdown menu in the Etsy listing.
This is “Blythe”
This is the etherial “Grace”
And the fab tonal semisolid “Dirty Mustard”
Lisa has put up a special pre-sale listing for us! Skeins will ship within 2 weeks of ordering, so depending on where you are in the world, there’s a good chance you could have it caked up and ready before the first pattern drops on May 1st.
