Video Workshop: Waltz Chasse Turning Left

If you have any significant ballroom dance experience, you’ll no doubt have danced hundreds of Waltz Chasses. But have you ever danced them turning to the left?

We typically dance the Chasse in Waltz in a straight line. A standard Chasse has the lady rotating leftwards during the figure, but it still progresses in a straight line. When you dance a Progressive Chasse to the Right, the man rotates leftwards during the figure, but still dances it in a straight line diagonally or along the line of dance.

In this half-hour workshop from our Kinvillage group class, we explore a fun grouping made up of a Chasse that actually rotates continually to the left, making a large circle along the floor that turns from diagonal to center to backing LOD. We then apply an unusual Wing that moves backwards, followed by an Closed Telemark to Contra Check. It’s a beautiful combination but quite challenging because it is outside the normal way we dance some of these figures.
