Sunrise Café, St. Catharines
Where breakfast comfort meets butter tart bliss in Niagara’s Garden City.
There’s something magical about a road trip through the Niagara Region. Maybe it’s the way the Welland Canal cuts through the landscape like a living piece of history, or how every small town seems to hide a museum, a story, or a bakery worth pulling over for. But if you’re anything like us, the real joy of travel lies in discovering those unassuming, family‑run spots where the coffee is hot, the portions are generous, and the pastries are made with love.
One such place is Sunrise Café in St. Catharines — a modest neighbourhood diner that shows you don’t need luxurious décor or a trendy Instagram wall to serve unforgettable flavour.
A Warm Welcome on Bunting Road
Tucked along Bunting Road, Sunrise Café is the kind of spot locals guard like a secret. Family‑owned and operated for over 20 years, by husband‑and‑wife team Glen and Mira, this diner radiates the kind of warmth you only get when the owners are truly hands‑on. They’re everywhere—taking orders, chatting with regulars, cooking, baking, and making sure every plate that leaves the kitchen is something they’re proud of.
Just minutes from the Welland Canal, the café makes the perfect stop before or after watching massive ships glide through the locks. It’s also a short drive from St. Catharines’ charming downtown, the city’s museums, and the scenic routes that lead you toward Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake and the region’s famous wineries.
Sunrise Café has been voted one of the best places for breakfast in St Catharines. It is the kind of place you might miss if you’re not looking for it—but once you’ve been, you’ll wonder how you ever drove past without stopping. It’s a true neighbourhood treasure in the heart of Niagara’s Garden City, and exactly the sort of spot that makes road‑tripping so rewarding.

Sunrise Cafe – Breakfast and Butter Tarts worth travelling for
It’s breakfast all day here, and the vibe is pure comfort. Friendly staff, a cosy atmosphere, and the unmistakable hum of a place that’s always busy because people genuinely love it.
We stopped in during a weekend getaway exploring the Niagara Region’s historic sites, the Welland Canal, and museums. Sunrise Café delivered exactly what a traveller hopes for: hearty, delicious, no‑nonsense breakfast classics. Think: perfectly cooked eggs and sausage, golden French toast, fluffy omelettes, eggs benny, and much more. Plates so full you may need to loosen your belt.
As we were seated at our table, we watched a steady parade of pancakes, waffles, eggs Benedict, and other breakfast beauties float past us to hungry tables. This place doesn’t just serve breakfast—they celebrate it.
The Butter Tart Revelation
Let’s be honest: The Breakfast is amazing at Sunrise Cafe, and totally worth travelling for. But we came here for the butter tarts. And Sunrise Café does not disappoint.
The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by trays upon trays of tarts covering the counters—each one hand‑pressed, each one uniquely shaped, each one decorated to match its flavour. It’s like a butter tart art gallery.
Flavours of Mira’s tarts include (but are not limited to) options such as: classics like Plain, Pecan, and Raisin; Peanut Butter Chocolate, Oreo Cookie, Turtle, Coconut Custard, Oh Henry, Fruit Crumbles, and the stunning Lemon Meringue.
Appearance
Sunrise Café’s butter tarts are little works of edible art—beautifully crafted, charmingly imperfect, and unmistakably handmade. Each one looks like it came straight from a grandmother’s kitchen, only with a delightful touch of flair. Their hand‑pressed shells give every tart its own personality, making a box of them feel like a collection of unique treasures.
Pastry
The pastry is a standout: thin, flaky, and delicately crisp, offering just enough structure to hold the filling without ever feeling heavy. It breaks cleanly, never crumbling into a mess or turning soggy. It’s the kind of crust that makes you appreciate the skill behind it—simple, classic, and executed perfectly.
Filling
Then comes the heart of the tart: rich, decadent, and silky smooth. Made with real butter and brown sugar, the filling has a firm texture that softens beautifully when warmed, releasing deep, bold flavours. Their specialty varieties are packed generously with pecans, chocolate, cookie pieces—whatever the theme demands—creating a satisfying bite every time.
Crust‑to‑Filling Ratio
Across the board, the balance is spot‑on. The pastry and filling complement each other without competing, creating that ideal butter tart harmony. Sure, a few tarts had a bit of bubbled pastry that pushed out some filling—an occasional quirk of handmade baking. But honestly, those little imperfections only add to their charm and authenticity.
Overall Experience:
I’ll admit it: my first batch of Sunrise Café butter tarts didn’t get the debut they deserved. I made a rookie mistake. They spent a little too long in the cooler bag during our road trip. Then they lingered too long in the fridge at home. Even so, they still managed to impress. This did mean that my first bite was not quite as it could have been, but Sunrise Café’s butter tarts still managed to shine. Their fillings are wonderfully rich, the flavour combinations are playful and creative, and the charming decorations make each tart feel like a tiny celebration. Even with my less-than-ideal first bite, these tarts proved they’re something special. Good news: They travel well.
PRO TIP:
As we left with our purchase, Mira shared her professional hot take. She suggested microwaving them for a few seconds to enhance the flavours, and she was absolutely right. Warmed up, these tarts shine. Once warmed, the firm, all-butter filling softens into a decadent, flavour-packed centre that makes every bite worth savouring.
A Bonus Treat: Fresh Apple Fritters
One of the most delightful moments of our visit occurred when a customer walked in asking about their apple fritters. Without hesitation, Glen lit up, declared that he had to try them fresh, and disappeared into the kitchen. Minutes later, he reappeared with a batch of hot fritters, freshly made on the spot.
That’s the kind of passion you can’t fake.
Why Sunrise Café belongs on your Niagara itinerary
Sunrise Café isn’t just a breakfast stop—it’s a slice of local life. It’s the kind of place where regulars know the owners by name and where tourists feel instantly at home. AND, where the food tastes like it was made for you personally.
A few things to keep in mind:
It’s a very popular spot for locals and visitors alike, especially on weekends.
They’re open seven days a week, but only until 2 pm.
The butter tarts go fast—so don’t wait. Get there earlier in the day to get the best selection of flavours.

It’s a true Niagara gem—comfortable, friendly, and delicious in every way. And for anyone on their own Butter Tart Quest, consider this your official invitation.
